Learning a Foreign Language with Rosetta Stone
by Martin Adams

Many people choose to learn a foreign language for career reasons and more recently it is for personal reasons too. If you truly want to travel and converse with the locals abroad or improve your career then you need to have a passion to learn.

OK, if you passed the qualifying question above, what method helps you learn quickly? Some people like to be in a classroom setting, or having a qualified personal tutor, or simply open a foreign language books and try to learn it by you.

A significant part of the learning a foreign language is to be able to hear a native speaker of the language you want to speak. This way you will be aware of your pronunciation, correct any mistakes, and learn how native speakers structure their sentences. You also want to know if you made any progress by receiving critiques on your speech and grammar. So, by enrolling in a class, it will give you the awareness and feedback you need but it will be limited to allow other classmates to participate as well. The choice of a personal tutor will surely give you more in depth feedback and quick corrections, but it will be more costly. The task of learning a language from a book and doing it by yourself is an extremely tough challenge. You will not hear a native speaker, not receive any progress on your pronunciation, or constructing coherent sentences aloud.

A very popular choice is available and combines all of these choices together. It is widely used by educational institutions, the US State Department, FBI, and others. The very successful program offered is the Rosetta Stone Language Course. The courses are on a CD which allows you to listen to a native speaker and complete the lessons at your own pace. This language program, which offers 30 different languages, provides you with lots of feedback so you will feel progress, be confident when you speak, listen, read and write in your new language. The Rosetta Stone Language Program is going to be less expensive than a personal tutor, but probably more than a classroom of students at your local schools or college.

The language lessons on CD are taught by not using any English while learning French, Spanish, German or any other language. Instead you will learn with verbal cues, pictures, and words to teach you a new language in the same way you acquired basic English as a youngster. You'll feel as if you are in a study abroad language program. Your acquisition of the new language should grow rapidly as your vocabulary grows and you understand the relationship between pictures, words, and sounds. The goal of the Rosetta Stone Language program is to understand how to construct words and sentences, as well as, to understanding the spoken language.
